The Hidden Costs of Poor Pool Maintenance: Do You Know the Real Price?

When it comes to choosing a pool maintenance company, many homeowners zero in on the monthly price tag. While saving a few bucks sounds great, it’s crucial to dig deeper—because what you don’t see could cost you a fortune. Enter water balance, the unsung hero of pool maintenance that can save you serious cash down the line.

The Real Deal with Water Balance

Water balance is all about keeping your pool's chemistry in check—maintaining the right levels of pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Too much or too little of any of these can lead to a variety of headaches: corrosion, scaling, and damage to your equipment. If you neglect water balance, you might find yourself in a costly predicament.

The Price of Neglect

Let’s break it down. A new pool pump can set you back anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000. If you choose a maintenance company that charges a seemingly low monthly rate but ignores the importance of water chemistry, you could be looking at a pump that fails in just three years instead of the five to seven years it should last. That’s $1,500 to $2,500 down the drain, effectively erasing any savings you may have made by selecting the cheaper service.

Don’t Forget About Other Equipment

It’s not just the pump at risk; multiport valves, actuators, and heaters all bear the brunt of unbalanced water. Repairing or replacing these parts can cost you hundreds of dollars. Think you’re saving with that cheap maintenance service? You might just be signing up for a financial headache.

Invest in Quality Maintenance

Choosing a company that prioritizes water balance is an investment. It extends the lifespan of your equipment, makes it run more efficiently, and reduces your energy bills. A well-maintained pool is not just a pretty place to relax; it’s a money-saving machine!

Do Your Homework

Before settling on a pool maintenance company, do your due diligence! Ask for references to gauge customer satisfaction and ensure that the company is properly certified and trained. A qualified team can make all the difference in keeping your water balanced and your equipment thriving.

Conclusion

So, next time you’re weighing your options for pool maintenance, remember: the monthly cost is just the tip of the iceberg. Focus on water balance to keep your pool sparkling and your wallet happy! Quality maintenance is the key to enjoying your pool without the financial drain. Don’t let a few saved dollars today turn into big expenses tomorrow!

Frequently Asked Questions

Chemical demand varies for each pool. Key factors influencing chemical requirements include usage, environment, and weather. The unpredictable nature of these factors makes estimating average chemical needs challenging. Another significant factor, though less common, is water loss due to pool leaks. Leaky pools can incur significantly higher costs due to increased requirements for chlorine, salt (for salt pools), and calcium. Additionally, larger pools incur higher chemical costs. A subjective estimate for monthly chemical costs for a 15k-20k gallon salt pool without leaks ranges from $75 to $150. Freshwater pools without leaks cost approximately 10% more to this item.

Unlike other chemicals, salt and calcium require additional steps for proper addition to water. The extra charge accounts for transportation, handling, and the precise process of dissolving salt or adding calcium in controlled amounts to the pool.

Salt Cell Cleaning - Salt pools save money in the long run due to reduced chemical demand but require quarterly salt cell cleaning. This maintenance is crucial for the unit's proper operation and to maximize its lifespan, typically estimated between 2 to 3 years with proper maintenance and sizing.

Dilution - Freshwater pools often require dilution service to adjust the levels of various sanitizing agents, particularly to reduce CYA (the main ingredient in chlorine tabs).

Phosphate Removal - Both freshwater and salt pools accumulate phosphates over time from surrounding dirt, rainwater runoff, and landscape fertilizers. Phosphates promote algae growth, making removal nessesary to prevent unmanageable algae problems despite adequate chlorine levels.

Pools are expensive to build and repair, particularly new plaster pools which are highly susceptible to staining, especially within the first year. The recommended pool vacuums prevent debris and red dirt from staining surfaces. They also help reduce residual plaster dust in the pores from solidifying during the initial months of plaster curing. Pools with vacs are also cleaner in-between weekly maintenance visits.

Chlorine - Due to flooding and drainage from the property, more organic material will be introduced to the pool, necessitating increased chlorine demand.

Sodium Bicarbonate - Rainwater has an alkalinity level close to zero. Sodium bicarbonate is used to raise alkalinity back to the required range.

Calcium - Rainwater lacks calcium, which serves as an alkalinity buffer essential for maintaining proper balance and protecting pool surfaces from corrosion.

Salt - For salt pools, salt is necessary to generate chlorine.

CYA - CYA is necessary to prevent chlorine from dissipating in sunlight.
